<p>Jack London was a famous US novelist who was travelling in the South Pacific in 1908 and holed up in Sydney while his boat The Snark was being repaired. His record of the fight went throughout the world, and prompted the call for a Great White Hope to beat the negro Jack Johnson.</p><br>
