This is a detailed introduction to 12 schools of thought which have had a significant influence on the study of history in the 20th century, from Empiricism to Post-colonialism, and from Marxism to the Ethnohistorians. Each chapter begins with an introduction to a particular school, its main protagonists and its critics, and follows with a section of further readings. The diverse selection gathered here contains classics such as G.R. Elton's "England Under the Tudors" and E.P. Thompson's "The Making of the English Working Class", as well as recent writings such as Henrietta Whiteman's "White Buffalo Woman" and Judith Walkowitz's "City of Dreadful Delight".
