Saddler’s Song. London 1790s to Parramatta 1840s. George Ellis is the son of a tanner living on the outskirts of London. When disease strikes his family, he is left alone and hurting, seeking a new life for himself. After hearing from a friend about the chance to start a business in New South Wales, he sells everything he knows and departs. His cherished violin is his most treasured possession, and his gift for creating beautiful music is kept hidden from all but a select few. Ben Parker is a saddler, like George; he is also alone in the world. Ben also sells up to move to the new colony. The two young men meet and combine their skills to start afresh in a new world. During the journey out, George’s skill as a violinist is revealed. On arrival, they find accommodation with a family with many lovely daughters. Two of these girls steal their hearts, but how will the business survive in an animal-starved land with limited access to leather? What is the saddler's song?
